i don't need a new laptop. i am waiting for geek squads dumb ass insurance to replace the screen. their turnover is like a month, as compared to office depots insurance program which has a turnover of like 8 days.

so if you are going to buy an insured laptop i would recommend office depot over best buy.

Hrm, I totally didn't think of the office stores for computers. Which is weird, 'cuz I got my very first computer from an OfficeMax.

Just got my wife an Asus 1005HAB netbook from Best Buy last night for $300.
Image

I spent maybe 5-6 hours cleaning all their bullshit software off from it, and I didn't get all of it since some of their software's titles are ambiguous and I can't tell whether it's necessary to run parts of the netbook or not.

I haven't decided yet whether I like it or not... if I can't stand the thing and need something bigger/stronger, I guess I'll check out Staples, Office Depot, and the like for alternatives.

I'm using it right now.

It's a netbook, so... you know, don't go expecting anything super awesome and fast. But I'm pretty pleased with it. My biggest fear was Windows 7 Starter, which has tons of limitations compared to the regular editions. But so far it really hasn't effected me -- especially since Asus was awesome enough to include a utility to change wallpapers (W7 starter doesn't let you).

I might end up buying some extra memory in the future. It's pretty speedy at the moment, all things considered (I can load MS Word 2007 in less than 10 seconds -- that's all that matters), but having just a little extra oomph would be nice.

It weighs about as much as a small-to-midsize textbook, so it should be plenty easy to carry around in our backpacks.

The battery life is pretty amazing. It's been running for about 3 1/2 to 4 hours and I've still got 54% charge remaining. Most of that time has been spent installing/uninstalling stuff and transferring files, so if you tweaked your power settings just right, turned off the wireless card, and were only using it for word processing, I could see it lasting maybe even up to 10 hours on a single charge. Which blows my mind, since my old laptop lasted 2 hours max. :)

My only real complaints at this point are:
A: It's such a huge pain in the ass to get rid of all their crap that came preinstalled. I spent several hours doing it last night, and a couple more yet today. And there's still stuff on here that could probably come off, but I don't wanna risk accidentally removing the mouse drivers or something.
B: The keyboard feels kinda cheap. The buttons rattle a bit when I type, and it makes me feel like if I push too hard they'll break. Other reviewers have said the same thing, but they also said that despite the feel, it's sturdy and didn't break. So maybe after I get used to it, it won't be an issue.

I've only had it for less than 24 hours, but so far I'd say it's worth the money. I'm gonna be doing some homework on it in a few minutes, so maybe I'll have a better impression of it after that. Or not.

The moral of the story is you can't get desktop quallity in a netbook

I consider them completely different devices anyway, each having its own purpose. It'd be like saying you can't get a quality toaster in a cell phone. :P

And actually, the netbook is about equal in quality to my media PC. Not that my media PC is anything fancy, but considering the size difference, I'm impressed.

yeah, netbooks will soon enough have the power to do what a laptop can. i mean, the reason to get a netbook is to have a dulled down laptop you only need for certain things on the road.... and thats why you get one, thats why you bought one. so it's not like you can complain it doesnt do a lot, it's not supposed to.

I've heard bad things about HP's computers in recent years. Apparently they bought Compaq and decided to adopt the shittiest aspects of that company into their own.

That said, my HP printer is pretty slick.

If you have the ability or know someone who does, I'd strongly recommend building the desktop yourself. You can get it precisely how you want it, build it with the ability to expand, and generally get it at a better price than the prebuilt ones. Plus you can install Windows yourself and save hours (or days) of hassle removing the manufacturer's junk software and demos.

Yeah, building a computer is something I always wanted to do, and now I plan on it, since I think I can use it for my final exam in an this A+ class. It will be cheaper..... unlike if you're trying to build a guitar and you need ultra rare parts

Computers ... laptops ... brands ... electronics in general ... opinions vary from person to person depending on their experience or what they research/ found about it. When I owned my Dell Inspi 6400, I read about others complaining about it, but it worked fine for me, and for whatever I wanted it to do for me. So a biased Godgrave of (just) today (02/10/2010) would say 'it's a matter of personal opinion'

If you need any help or anything, you're welcome to drop by. Or just post it here if it's easy enough. I've got a good amount of experience with parts picking and assembling.
