RSE version of new Erebus song -- feedback please!

Postby JimminySnakeTits » Sun May 23, 2010 5:52 pm

I just finished a song for Erebus and I'd like some feedback. It's been awhile since I've actually written a song for Erebus (Dave still writes most of the awesome (imo) songs in Erebus).

Download the Song

I was inspired a little bit by Melechesh (the Phyrgian Dominant mode I used throughout is the biggest thing), and some by old-school Florida Death Metal (you should be able to hear those sections pretty obviously).

It's a little shorter than I was thinking originally, but it's pretty uptempo throughout, so I think the length works. I had a bitch of a time writing one transition in particular, so let me know what you think about them.

I have programmed some basic idea of what the drums will be, but Cross (our drummer) will flesh out their actual sound. I'm mostly interested in what you guys think of the songwriting and where I can improve.

Finally, these obviously aren't real instruments, but the RSE in GP6 is pretty fucking good - I'm really impressed with the sound on this considering it's totally computer generated.

Thanks!

awesome song, but it'd be nicer to hear in a non-8bit style

I'm listening to it now ... no seconds/ minutes time for the track? At around 3/4 the track, end it. The opening big breakdown that you used again in the end during the last quarter should sound good with actual instruments/ vocals, etc. Cool, decent track!

Not sure what you mean by this...the file hosted is an mp3, so if you just clicked the link, your browser will use whatever you have set as the default music player for the web. If you have quicktime as the default, I don't think it shows time. If you have another, it should. Anyway, point being, I don't use whatever site Phil uses to upload the audio - I simply host the file and post the link, so whether or not you see time on the file is up to you :P

Do you mean end it right after the second time of playing the "big breakdown" section or before it starts?

Before the breakdown starts again.

I'm gonna jump into this later, Gage. However, I think we should start a "Production and Tips" forum on here. For threads like this and the ones I post. Thoughts?

eh.. i think we have more forums than we do active members. I guess I never look at what forum a thread is in.. I just look at new and active posts and do not care what forum they belong in

Heh, sorry...wasn't trying to sound upset or anything, I just wanted to let you know why there wasn't a time marker on the song.

Thanks for the feedback on the song! I can see some of the advantages of ending before the second heavy/chuggy section. It would make for a pretty pronounced "stop!" without going back through parts already heard.

The main reasons I went on a little longer were 1) the song would be pretty short without anything more and 2) I wanted to bring back that super heaviness for another go around. We really haven't used that element much in Erebus and I wanted to highlight it in this song. I tried to create a variation on the part heard earlier (it's slightly different) and did the same with the ending section. Each time that main driving riff is heard (3 times total - the first of which right after the intro), I added a little more intensity (by the end it has sort of a triplet "burst" feel to it). The idea I had was to make it more intense each time right up until the end.

Were there any other reasons why you felt it should end where you said? Did you feel it was too repetitious or you got bored by the end or something else?

Wish I had speakers at work! I'll re-listen to it tonight, and let you know. I don't wanna sound like an ass if I jumped the gun on my opinion. I'll figure a way (using the tip from your post) on getting the seconds/ timer on the track so I can pin-point also

I have earphones with me right now! But, I can't have people see me put em on and chill online, working side by side, because I tell them not to do that! So, the Monitor of the Office has to stay trve to the practices he preaches yo ... XoXo Gossip Girl. If I had speakers it'd mean the Boss was ok with me listening to stuff, that's the rule out here heh.
